Day one of the new blog, and I am still trying to figure out what I might do with it. My newest idea is to document the next 365 days of my growth and learning-one new thing every day. Not a new idea, but a stretch for me.
So here is day one. Today, I sat in a United Streaming workshop. Not so new to me, but new to others in the room. I spent the first few minutes spinning my wheels, my feet firmly planted in the basics along with the other participants…and then I stretched…across the gap….and twittered. “Anyone out there have some great ideas I can share about United Streaming? ” Sure enough, the ideas started coming and I was the bridge between my new and expanding social network, and the 5 other people in that workshop. I absorbed, learned, and then shared small bites with the group. What did I see? Learning on many levels- I got new ideas about editing US video and having students create voice over to show understanding of content, and other participants learned how to advance search and visited the DEN website for the first time. I stretched, the network grew, and the gap got a little smaller. Thanks Lori A. for sharing, and thanks Shelly for letting me bring a bit of chaos to your workshop! I needed a stretch today.

Hey Amy, what a cool concept for your blog. And what a privilege to share in your reflections. I’ll be coming back for more.

Congrats on your new blog and welcome to the blogosphere! I noticed that you have a Show Yourself badge on the sidebar. Did you do that with a special widget? I haven’t been able to get mine to work in EduBlogs. Have fun learning!

What a great undertaking! A post a day! I’m impressed. BTW…how do you allow children to do voice overs? It must be another tool. I would love to go through US training and have been speaking with my administrators about it. I’m jealous!

I was glad to help. Don’t forget to join the DEN in RL and SL to continue to network with others about using Discovery Streaming. Lots of great webinars, workshops and blog and forum help.

Alice- I picked that widget up on a blog somewhere…I will try to find it and post it in a future blog…when I first tried to embed it, I could not get it to work, but then it just worked! That is how I solve most of my tech issues, just keep clicking until it works:) Not very savvy I am afraid!
Lisa- Lori A. told me you could drop the US video into imovie, then change the audio to allow students to do voice overs- I am in PC world, so I am looking for a program that would let me do that same thing. I will post here when I find it:) Thanks for visiting the blog..as you can see, I have already faltered on the blog a day thing-but hope to catch up this weekend.

Amy,
Another way to have students show that they understand the content of the US Video is after editing the video and only showing the parts you want to show. I turn the sound off on the US and I talk through the video explaining to the kids what they need to know. I put key words or new words on the board and make sure to use those. Then, after I have “talked/shown” the video two or three times with me talking not the US video talking, I have the kids turn to their partner and I play the video again (still with no sound) one of them has to retell the video in their own words and then they switch. I saw this technique at the ESL conference I went to last year in KC…it was pretty cool. The presenter picked a really difficult topic but I still remember everything that the video was about and could probably repeat it back…..now that doesn’t have the technology part like having the kids do the voice over, but still shows they master or at least on a lower-level, understand what is being “taught”. Have you looked at inserting the videos in Windows Media Maker??

D-
I think you could put them in Media Maker, but then you couldn’t edit the audio could you?
Thanks for commenting- this just proves that we need more time to share…sad that we have to give ideas via the blog when we teach right next door to each other!

The Show Yourself widget was mentioned on Vicki Davis’ blog - Cool Cat Teacher. Here’s a link I found for the widget: http://www.dbachrach.com/showyourself/
